Abstract

A narrative is a story that is created in a constructive formation such as a piece of poetry, prose, or theatre that describes a sequence of fictional or non-fictional events. This paper is a systematic study of the narrative of Sun Yat Sen's revolutionary activities in Singapore as reflected in Singapore Literature and the arts. The establishment of the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall in the 1990s by the Singapore government marked a new policy to recognize the historical value of the villa where Sun lived and the revolution which changed China. A reading of the literary, dramatic and visual arts prouced in Singapore since the early days shows that the flag bearers of the mainstream Chinese language and cultures embraced fully the Father of China image, while the post-independent generation Singaporeans interrogated and deconstructed the narrative put forward by the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall or what I have called the Nanyang Narrative of Sun Yat Sen. An close analysis of Sun Yat Sen's relationship with Singapore and Southeast Asia also demonstrates that many stories and events described in the works are mixed with facts and myths.
