This year is the 110th anniversary of the passing of anti-Japanese stalwart Luo Fuxing (1886-1914). Luo was born in Batavia, in what is now Jakarta, Indonesia. His ancestry traces back to Zhenping County (now Jiaoling), Jiaying Department, Guangdong Province. At his first birthday, his parents moved the family back to their original home in Guangdong. At 10 years of age, he went back to Batavia to live with his paternal grandfather Luo Yaonan. In 1903, he again moved with his family, this time to Taiwan, where they settled in Niulanhu Village, Miaoli 1st Settlement, Hsinchu Subprefecture. In 1907, he and his family left Taiwan, heading for Guangdong but first stopping in Xiamen. Because he admired Sun Yat-sen and his revolutionary movement, Luo joined the China Tongmenghui (United League). He then began to embrace the revolution. In December 1912, Luo Fuxing again arrived in Taiwan. He planned to initiate an anti-Japanese revolutionary movement in Miaoli, but this unfortunately failed and he was arrested.
January 6, 1914, the judge of Miaoli’s interim court declared Luo Fuxing – as a person with politically dangerous views who had attempted to work with China Revolutionary Army soldiers who had come to Taiwan to foment trouble – as having violated the Criminal Punishment of Banditry Order. Applying Article 1 of the Criminal Punishment of Banditry Order, the judge sentenced him to death; on March 3rd, Luo Fuxing was executed by hanging.
This article primarily analyzes sources on/from the period of Japanese rule, such as the Taiwan Daily News (Taiwan Nichinichi Shinpo), The Complete Files of the Luo Fuxing Anti-Japanese Revolution Incident, and A Commemoration of Luo Fuxing, Taiwan's Anti-Japanese Hero and Martyr to the Nation, on the 100th Anniversary of His Death. This article uses a nationalist perspective to explore the relationship between Sun Yat-sen, revolutionary leader in the late Qing/early Republic era, with his follower Luo Fuxing. This paper also looks at how Luo’s anti-Japanese activities developed in Taiwan’s period of Japanese rule, to give a remembrance of Luo Fuxing, anti-Japanese stalwart and national martyr, on the 110th anniversary of his death.
