Abstract

Abstract

In 1923, Dr. Sun Yat-sen was invited to speak at the University of Hong Kong. He stated that the source of his revolutionary ideas came from Hong Kong and explained how they originated. It has been 100 years since Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s speech, and it is time to revisit this significant historical moment. Looking back a century, when discussing Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s final visit to Hong Kong, most publications in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau only mention the speech; furthermore, The Collected Works of Sun Yat-sen, only includes the two essays delivered at the University of Hong Kong (“The Generation of Revolutionary Thought” and “Reducing an Army and Building Roads) and lacks historical references, such as newspapers and periodicals. As a result, the biography and life story of Dr. Sun Yat-sen is incomplete. Additional descriptions of the visit are included Prof. Luo Hsiang-Lin’s The Historical Site of the Founding Father in Hong Kong, and Chou Chuo-Huai’s The Grand Occasion of the Founding Father Stopping Over in Hong Kong in 1923. However, although these works look back on some of Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s itinerary (from February 17 to February 21), they mostly cover his speech at Hong Kong University, and the content is marred by its brevity as well as errors in the itinerary. Therefore, this paper attempts to broaden the scope of Sunology Research by examining news articles and magazines from the past, including Chinese Mail, Yichun Daily, China Daily, and Hong Kong Daily Press. Furthermore, the authors investigated Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s path through Hong Kong by using field research and map analysis. This paper seeks to fill a historical gap, correct some research errors, and augment and revise Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s chronicle to make his life story more comprehensive. Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s trip to Hong Kong lasted a total of 5 days, and many of the events were linked to the governor of Hong Kong, Sir Edward Reginald Stubbs, as well as Sir Robert Ho Tung. This confirms that Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s trip involved more than just a speech at the University of Hong Kong; it was also about promoting business development in Hong Kong and Guangdong, laying the groundwork for peace and stability, and ensuring a win-win situation for Guangdong and Hong Kong. Throughout it all, Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s significant contributions to the political, commercial, and academic communities are evident, showcasing his hard work and valuable services.
