In Japan, Dr. Sun Yat-sen is most commonly known as Son Bun, the Japanese reading of his school name 孫文; in Japan, he is treated as a revolutionary, whose career and deeds are been included in high school world history textbooks. The Japanese public thus have a basic familiarity with him. In his youth, he studied Western medicine and treated patients; however, ordinary people know little about the history of his early medical studies and practice. In November 2020, the Son Bun Memorial Hall in Kobe held a special exhibition, Dr. Sun Yat-sen, Who Battled the Monster of Disease. This paper is a preliminary discussion of the medical experiences of Dr. Sun Yat-sen and the characteristics and significance of his knowledge about public health, as demonstrated in the images displayed during the special exhibition.
This paper introduces Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s youth of treating disease with Western medicine. Then, the content of Samuel Osborn's First Aid Ambulance Lectures, as translated by Dr. Sun, reveal that Sun was a true science advocate. This paper then introduces how Sun fell ill and received medical treatment in Japan, events known to few. Finally, his exchanges with Japanese physician Takano Takichi are described.
