Dr. Sun Yat-sen (1866–1925) thought that as a society and economy develop, people will have more and more ways to spend their money. Common people can only pursue wealth and rely on money because it is tied to everything: life and death, misfortune, happiness, anger, sorrow, and joy. As a result, the idea that “money is everything” runs deep in the minds of the general public. Dr. Sun Yat-sen conducted extensive research into the origins of wealth and goods, and he examined the fundamental characteristics of money. But the Wuchang Uprising prevailed. He went back to China with the message that revolutionary fervor is more important than financial backing: “I took the revolutionary mindset back with me, convinced that material wealth is not everything.”According to Shibusawa Eiichi (1840–1931), monetary wealth is paramount; without it, not only can individuals and societies perish, but entire nations collapse as well. His philosophy, which he called “having a samurai’s spirit and a merchant’s business sense,” was founded on the teachings of Confucius; he held the Analects of Confucius in the highest esteem. He was committed to reversing the public’s contempt for wealth, and he cautioned young people that their success would be fleeting if they pursued it dishonestly. Dr. Sun Yat-sen is the father of Chinese revolution and Shibusawa Eiichi is the father of Japanese capitalism; although their perspectives on wealth are different, they share the desire to get rich and the dream of chasing money, as this article shows through an examination of their respective conceptions of “not suffering from poverty but suffering from inequality” and the resolution of the problems stemming from money.
